New recreational facilities open at Covent Garden, Herstelling
Residents of Covent Garden and Herstelling on the East Bank of Demerara now have new spaces for sport, recreation and community activities following the handover of two modern multipurpose facilities on Wednesday.
The facilities feature playing fields, basketball courts, pavilions and amenities for persons living with disabilities.
These facilities provide residents and neighbouring communities with accessible spaces to exercise and gather.
They were delivered through a partnership between the government and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme.
The programme supports better housing conditions and community infrastructure in Regions Three and Four.
Minister of Housing Collin Croal, Minister within the Ministry of Housing Vanessa Benn, representatives of the Central Housing and Planning Authority and IDB Representative Lorena Solórzano Salazar attended the handover.
Delivering the feature address, Minister Benn said the investment reflects a wider effort to improve living conditions and build stronger communities.
The facilities complete a group of four developed under the programme. The others are located at Sophia and Onderneeming, Region Three.
“It not only speaks of these four community facilities, but it also speaks of the roads that have been built, the core homes that were constructed,” she said.
At the recreational facilities, fencing and energy-efficient LED lighting support their use, while washrooms, footpaths and walking areas cater to residents of different ages.
She also stressed that accessibility had been considered from the design stage, with pathways, entrances and washrooms intended to allow persons with disabilities to use and enjoy the facilities.
“Care and attention have also been paid to ensuring that our brothers and sisters who are differently able are able to access, to use and to enjoy these facilities as well,” she said.
The minister encouraged community participation, saying residents should feel included and valued as the spaces become part of everyday community life.
She added that more than 250 core homes were also constructed through the partnership, with beneficiaries contributing towards their homes.
